”Darn it all, I still haven’t gotten the hang of this right…”

Essiri glared at the stones in front of her. Feeling adventurous, she had thought to research a simple science experiment useful for telling stones apart— a Mohs test, something she thought would be quite simple.

But for a simplistic science experiment, the stones in front of her were causing her great grief. Her claws had been quite scratched up as she did “hardness tests” on them, and she had trouble locating some of the items the experiment called for in terms of how to test the hardness of various stones.

To make things even worse, she wasn’t even sure of what her sample stones were.

When she had read up on how to perform a Mohs test at her home, all of her findings said such a thing was simple. You could tell easily what would scratch copper but not quartz, a claw but not steel— you could easily narrow down what range of things your stone could be.

But not today.

”I really didn’t want to go up to the market and see… that rock-keeper.”

She hissed thinking of Daisuke. Essiri hated being shown up as “less knowledgeable” in various subject areas, and certainly Daisuke— with his passion for stones of all sorts, still showed her up in this area of all areas especially.

She grumbled but continued on.

As the “experiment” continued on, she started to calmly remember a bit of what Daisuke had told her once about some minerals such as talc— which was the softest. It would be scratched by a claw, whereas something like calcite would scratch a claw but not quartz.

Peeping to and from her books, remembering that yes— she did not have all the standards of a mohs scale, but that she could possibly piece together what some of her samples were, she started to cheer up in her rocky little home.

”Perhaps I will try to go up to that old jeweler and see if I can show him a thing or two about stones! I think I have a nice piece of Fluorite on my hands if I’ve tested these stones right…”

Now, lacking in some of the harder stones, Essiri could not really figure out if she had anything super valuable— such as Topaz, Corundum, or anything like that. But it did seem her experiment allowed her to figure out that she had found a nice piece of Quartz recently. Chest puffed out, she started to collect up her items and books, gathering them in a bag as she planned out a route to the Market.

”I’ll certainly best that man in knowledge this time. Maybe I’ll be able to get him to make something for me at a discount! I never have enough tokens to make jewelry…”

Essiri pondered this possibility as she flew out of her outcropping into the bright autumn evening sky.

I FEEL HER PAIN -- I've done many a science project where I didn't have the right materials. It's so frustrating! Good job powering through with what you've got, Essiri. <3
